- Test plumbing system for leaks (run every faucet and drain)
- Inspect propane tanks and lines for leaks
- Test appliances
- Sanitize fresh water holding tank and flush out thoroughly
- Wash
- Prepare for the Trip
- Make reservations
- Get driving directions
- Make an itinerary
- Reschedule appointments if necessary
- Balance your checkbook (so you know exactly what funds you have during the trip)
- Check up on your insurance policies to find out about coverage for things like health and auto emergencies while you are away
- Purchase any advance tickets or passes needed for your trip
- Make sure you have all user names, passwords, proxy information, dial-up access numbers, etc. to check your email from the road or forward it to a web based email service that you can check from any computer
- Prepare Your House
- Hire a house sitter and prepare a notebook with all of the instructions for him/her
- Put mail on hold if you will be gone for more than a weekend
- Set up pet boarding or hire a pet sitter (usually your house sitter)
- Start using up perishable food if you will be gone for more than a weekend
- Hide any valuable items that may be easy for thieves to see through windows
- Fill up RV tanks
- Propane
- Fresh water (enough to get you by until you get to a hookup, but try not to carry around more than half a tank)
- Add chemicals to gray and black water tanks
- Fill black water tank 1/4 to 1/3 full with water
- 1-2 Days Before Trip
- Turn on RV refrigerator
- Pack all non-perishable foods
- Clean your house (so you can come back to a clean, organized, relaxing home)
- Set house light timers
- Finish washing your laundry (so you can wear it on the trip, have clean clothes when you return, and don't attract pests that might be attracted by food stains, like ants, while you're gone)
- Send out payments for bills that will be due while you are gone
- Immediately Before Trip
- Pack perishable food
- Empty house garbage
- Clean house dishes
- Adjust house thermostat
- Unplug / turn off unnecessary house appliances and electronics
- Make sure RV hookups are disconnected
- Make sure all items inside the RV are secure
- Set RV fridge to 12V
- Make sure propane is turned off
- Make sure interior RV lights and appliances are off
- Close RV windows / vents
- Make sure doors, outer compartments, slide outs, steps, awnings, antennas, etc. are retracted and secure
- Make sure all covers for plumbing, gas, and electrical systems are closed (such as the cover for the sewer outlet)
- Fill tow vehicle or towable with gas
- Give house sitter / pet sitter a copy of the keys to your house, outbuildings, vehicles they have permission to use, etc.
- Hook Up Vehicle to RV
- Test wiring to ensure all lights work on RV and vehicle
- As You Leave the House
- Lock all windows and close blinds
- Make sure pets have access to everything they need if they are staying home and aren't trapped in a room, and close off any rooms they aren't allowed in
- Lock all doors
- Set alarm
- Before You Drive Off
- Make sure all jacks are up
- Remove levelers and wheel chocks and store for use at your destination
- Do one last walk around and inspection of the RV
- Make sure you have cash and coins within your reach for tolls
- Adjust your mirrors
